Hairlines carry more than they look like they do

The main column takes whatever the rails leave. Below 1080px the right rail goes, and below 768px the page is one column with this text first.

A one-pixel line in the right colour separates two things without drawing attention to itself. Borders that are any heavier start to read as boxes, and a page of boxes reads as a form.
