QuoteBand

An opening statement that fills the window: a micro-label, one large serif line, its source, and a hint at the bottom that scrolls on.

Open at 1280px

Once, at the top of a page, in place of a hero. Not as a pull-quote inside an article.

<TopNav … overlay />
<QuoteBand eyebrow="Writing since 2019" quotes={quotes} pullNext />
<main>…</main>

quotes is a list of { text, attribution }; each visit shows one at random, and a page without script shows the first. A single quote can go in the slot with attribution instead. Pair it with the nav’s overlay, so the nav takes no height and the band is a whole screen.

With pullNext, the element after the band rises over it faster than the page scrolls at first, easing out over the first 60% of a window, so a couple of scrolls reach it. That element gets the canvas behind it, and should be taller than a window.

The uppercase micro-label, the quote in the display serif wrapped at measure (34 characters by default), the source in muted body text, and the hint at the bottom edge: a micro-label over a chevron.

Prop Values
tone cream (default), dark, or bare, which paints no background over a page that has its own
overlayTone With bare: on-dark (default) or ink, for the text colours
autoSize On by default: up to 90 characters display-lg, up to 180 display-md, then display-sm
hintLabel text (default) or none, the chevron alone with the text as its name
scrollHint The hint’s text; false drops the hint
minHeight 100svh by default

The quote is a <blockquote> in a <figure>, with the source as its <figcaption>. The hint is a button that scrolls to the content, stopping below a TopNav that stays over the page so the nav does not cover its start; the arrow-only form keeps a 44px target and an accessible name. The quick rise of pullNext is a scroll-driven animation that a reader who asked for reduced motion does not get.

QuoteBand.astro. Ported from the handoff. quotes and pullNext are new; the handoff’s background layer is left out.

TopNav, whose overlay mode sits over the band.
